Last Saturday, November 2nd, 2024, our team embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Fteri, a remote village nestled in the heart of the Pieria mountain range. As we filmed for the TV show, “Discovering Pieria” sponsored by experiencepieria.info, we were transported to a place where time seemed to stand still.
Perched at an altitude of 1,300 meters, Fteri is a true escape. Situated at the intersection of Pieria, Kozani, and Larissa, this tiny village offers a serene retreat surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty.
A Glimpse into Rural Life
We were warmly welcomed by Mr. Christos Beys, one of the village’s two permanent residents. Along with his wife, he has chosen to live a simple yet fulfilling life in this idyllic setting. Mr. Beys shared insights into his off-grid existence, cultivating his own vegetables and embracing a slower pace of life. As we sat together, cracking walnuts harvested from their trees, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace.
A Culinary Delight
A culinary highlight was undoubtedly the local black beans. Grown at altitudes exceeding 800 meters, these unique beans have a flavor reminiscent of chestnuts! We savored them in two simple yet delicious preparations: with olive oil and lemon, and with olive oil and vinegar. It was an incredible taste sensation that left us wanting more.
Exploring the Natural Beauty
After a hearty meal, we set off on a hike to the nearby Vathres, or natural pools. Guided by Mr. Bey’s faithful dog, Hector, we trekked through a lush forest until we reached these enchanting, crystal-clear pools. It was the perfect opportunity to reconnect with nature and cool off on a warm autumn day.
