Fteri, Pieria | A Mountain Village, Forest Trails & Rural Life

A quieter side of Pieria, surrounded by mountain forest and nature.

High in the mountains of Pieria, Fteri is a small mountain settlement where the landscape, the people and the rhythm of rural life create a very different experience of the region.

We visited Fteri in November 2024 while filming for Experience Pieria and our travel series Discovering Pieria. What stayed with us was not a single attraction, but the feeling of being surrounded by forest, mountains and a much slower way of life.

Life in the Mountains

Our visit brought us into contact with one of the most personal sides of Fteri: the people who have chosen to live close to the land and the seasons.

Mr. Christos Beys welcomed us together with his wife and shared something of their everyday life in the village. Growing vegetables, gathering food from the land and living simply, their way of life offered a glimpse into a rural Greece that is increasingly difficult to find.

Even something as simple as sitting together and cracking walnuts from their own trees became part of the experience.

A Taste of Fteri

Food was another part of the welcome. During our visit, we tried local black beans, prepared simply with olive oil and lemon, and with olive oil and vinegar.

It was the kind of food that needs little explanation. Simple ingredients, local knowledge and a meal shared after a morning in the mountains.

Fteri and the Vathres

Beyond the village, the surrounding forest offers a completely different side of Fteri. During our visit, we followed the trail towards the Vathres — natural pools surrounded by the forest.

The walk took us through an autumn landscape of trees, mountain air and running water. The Vathres are not experienced simply as a destination to tick off a list; the journey through the forest is an important part of the experience.

Why Visit Fteri?

Fteri is interesting precisely because there is no need to rush through it. Its appeal lies in the combination of mountain scenery, forest, local food and encounters with people who still live closely connected to their surroundings.

For travelers interested in nature, hiking, rural life and authentic local experiences, Fteri offers a different perspective on Pieria — one that moves away from the coast and towards the mountains.

Planning a Visit

Fteri is a mountain destination, so conditions can change with the season. If you plan to explore the surrounding trails and Vathres, comfortable walking shoes and suitable clothing are essential.

• Explore with care: Mountain trails can be uneven and conditions may change depending on the weather.
• Dress for the mountains: Temperatures can be considerably different from those on the coast.
• Respect the landscape: Take your waste with you and leave the forest and natural pools as you found them.
• Allow time: Fteri is better experienced slowly, rather than as a quick stop on a busy itinerary.
