Kiwifruit of Olympus — A Thank-You to the Farmers of Agios Spyridon

Kiwifruit of Olympus — A Thank-You to the Farmers of Agios Spyridon

With the Locals — Stories from the foothills of Mount Olympus. 1 Oct 2025

Women workers under the trees carefully harvest kiwifruits, placing them into wooden crates loaded onto the platform of a Massey Ferguson 135 tractor.

In Agios Spyridon, where Olympus unfurls its first ridges into villages and orchards, the kiwifruit grows with a patient pride.
I visited the Alexiou family — Mr. Christos, the man who first planted kiwifruit here in 1986, his son Giorgos, and young Christos, the third generation —
and walked rows of vines that taste of mountain nights and careful hands.

The Place — Night Air, Mountain Light

“The microclimate — cool summer nights and clear days — makes our kiwis the best,” Giorgos said.
It’s not a claim of pride alone but an observation you can taste: fruit that ripens slowly,
with a layered sweetness and a bright, mineral note that remembers the mountain.

The Harvest — Hands, Tractors, & Rhythm

Under the shade of the trellises, teams move with calm precision. Women pick fruit, examine it for color and firmness,
and place each kiwi into crates that are stacked onto the platform of an old Massey Ferguson 135.
The tractor’s silhouette is as familiar here as a family name — it helps carry not just fruit but a rhythm of work passed down through generations.

The Heart of the Harvest: A worker gathers kiwifruit near the classic Massey Ferguson 135 — teamwork and tradition in every bucket.

From Branch to Crate: Carefully packed kiwifruit ready for market — a small local economy carried by steady hands.

Taste & Meaning

To taste a kiwi here is to taste a place: cool night sugars, the mountain’s mineral whisper, and a texture that holds.
When you buy fruit directly from the farmer, you’re not just getting better flavour — you’re contributing to a living practice that keeps villages alive.

How to Visit — Practical Notes

  • Best for: Food-lovers, slow travelers, families and anyone curious about agritourism in Pieria. Search terms: kiwifruit Pieria, agritourism Olympus, farm visits Agios Spyridon.
  • When to go: Late afternoon for soft light and the most honest moments of work.
  • Visit Tips: Wear comfortable shoes and carry a small bag. Kiwis here aren’t for sale — farmers harvest them for shipments worldwide — but you’re welcome to politely ask if you can taste a few and share a moment with those tending the vines. October is the perfect month for the orchard experience; other seasons bring different rhythms.
