I have been living in Litochoro since 2013, and I have always been captivated by the beauty of the Pieria region. This weekend, a friend and I decided to go on a camping and cooking trip in the countryside. We ended up in the charming village of Agios Dimitrios, but as we explored the area, we found a lovely local group and decided to indulge in some delicious traditional dishes instead of cooking ourselves. Let’s go through this captivating experience!
Agios Dimitrios is an idyllic village in Pieria region, it is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, including lush landscapes and captivating cultural traditions.
Agios Dimitrios, or Άγιος Δημήτριος in Greek, is a quaint and enchanting village nestled in the Pieria region, just 33 kilometers from the bustling town of Katerini.
First, as we follow the locals’ recommendations, we found a perfect camping spot at the Prophet Elias, a church located on a hill with expansive views of the mountains.
This peaceful place is perched high on a hill. The Prophet Elias church overlooks the sprawling mountainous landscape, offering an enchanting and expansive 360-degree view that captivates the senses with its natural beauty and tranquility.
During our stay, we connected with a group of welcoming locals who introduced us to an unforgettable culinary experience.
They skillfully prepared a mouthwatering array of regional meats and appetizers, catering to a diverse range of tastes. As we savored the local Tsipouro from Rachi, the ambient Music elevated our moods, and we found ourselves immersed in joyful dancing that carried on well into the late afternoon.
After being pleasantly surprised, we discovered that the hosting group, mostly comprising locals, was from the KALAS GROUP Company . This encounter provided a unique opportunity to connect with those who enhance our culinary creations with their seasoning, while also allowing us to sample their range of products.
In the later part of the afternoon, we expressed our heartfelt appreciation as we bid them farewell, thankful for the exceptional hospitality and the truly memorable dining experience.
Then, We had the best time exploring beautiful trails and taking in the amazing views during our refreshing hikes. There, we reveled in the experience of embarking on invigorating hikes along meandering trails surrounded by towering trees, fragrant wildflowers, and the symphony of chirping birds.
As we navigated the winding paths, we were delighted to discover some of its hidden gems. We spent delightful moments in a charming, cozy shop the Βees of Olympus (Melisses tou Olympou) adorned with a diverse selection of fresh, homemade sweets and an array of meticulously crafted local products. Notably, Joanna’s meticulously prepared baklava left a lasting impression, providing a perfect balance of sweet and nutty flavors.
Overall, Agios Dimitrios acts as more than just a destination; it’s a compelling opportunity to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Take a breather and soak up the peaceful vibes, mingle with the locals, and discover the hidden gems scattered across this captivating part of the Pieria region.
