As part of our ongoing mission to highlight Pieria’s hidden gems, I recently had the pleasure of dining at Grillhouse Karathanas. Let me tell you, this traditional tavern didn’t disappoint!
From the moment you step inside, the history whispers at you. Established in 1961, Grillhouse Karathanas boasts a clean and inviting atmosphere, adorned with charming traditional items. The open-door windows, acting as both windows and doors, create a delightful breeze on warm days, perfect for enjoying the fresh air while savoring your meal.
But the real magic happens on the plate. Every dish is a testament to their commitment to local ingredients. The quality of the meats sourced from Lofos and the nearby village of Vria (a village in Pieria renowned for its high-quality meat) is exceptional, and the fresh, seasonal vegetables burst with flavor.
Their signature grilled specialties are cooked to perfection, offering that irresistible smoky aroma and juicy texture we all crave. Don’t forget to try their famous fresh-cut fries from Livadi village with cheese and oregano, the perfect crispy accompaniment to any entree.
One of the highlights was their Tirokafteri. Unlike many restaurants that rely on pre-made versions, their tirokafteri is crafted in-house using fresh, local ingredients.
Tirokafteri is a creamy and spicy Greek dip or spread that packs a flavorful punch. The name itself is a combination of two Greek words: “tiri” meaning cheese and “kaftero” meaning spicy. Typically made with feta cheese as its base, tirokafteri incorporates a blend of roasted red peppers, chili peppers, garlic, olive oil, and sometimes lemon juice or vinegar. The result is a deliciously complex flavor profile that is both creamy and spicy.
This versatile dish is often served as an appetizer with warm pita bread, used as a spread for sandwiches, or enjoyed as a topping for grilled meats or vegetables. Tirokafteri is a true taste of Greece and a must-try for anyone who loves spicy food.
The portions are generous, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. For instance, this meal for two included roasted pork and roasted tender young goat (katsikaki), crispy fried potatoes with Greek cheese, a refreshing Greek salad with delicious feta cheese, a spicy colorful “Pikantiki” salad, and tirokafteri.
Pikantiki salad, also known as Politiki salad, is a vibrant and flavorful dish with roots in Constantinople. This refreshing salad features a delightful combination of cabbage, carrots, sweet Florina peppers, and celery. Traditionally served cold with a generous drizzle of olive oil and vinegar, Pikantiki salad is a refreshing accompaniment to any meal. Its bold flavors and fresh ingredients make it a beloved choice among those who appreciate the authentic tastes of Greek cuisine.
Pair it all with 500ml of delicious high-quality local wine from the nearby village of Rachi for just 35 euros.
To complete the perfect meal, we were treated to a delightful surprise: a creamy vanilla ice cream served in a crispy biscuit cup. The refreshing sweetness was the ideal ending to our flavorful journey, leaving us completely satisfied. Unfortunately, our enjoyment was so intense that we forgot to capture this delightful dessert on camera!
While the food is undoubtedly a star, the ambiance adds another layer of charm. Enjoy the gentle rhythm of traditional Greek music, subtly enhancing your dining experience without being intrusive. The lively atmosphere at night buzzes with local crowds, while lunchtime offers a more relaxed setting. Either way, Grillhouse Karathanas delivers an authentic Pierian experience that’s sure to leave a lasting impression.
For those seeking a taste of tradition served with exceptional quality, Grillhouse Karathanas is a must-visit. Located in Lofos village, the tavern is easy to find and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. You’ll find an ATM right beside the tavern for added convenience. The tavern is located in the heart of the village center square, where you can also relax under the shade of majestic Plane trees – once considered sacred by ancient Greeks.
