Why do we name it Skoteina Morna?
Known as “Morna” since the 19th century, the village was named after the Turkish word for “dark place” due to the dense vegetation that covers the area.
It’s interesting to learn about the history of Skoteina, or Morna as the locals still refer to it. Back in 1926, the village was given the Greek name “Skoteina”, but it seems that the original name has stuck around. It’s clear that the village played an important role in connecting Western Macedonia to Katerini, the capital of the Pieria region. And the thriving timber factory that once operated there, taking advantage of the top-quality beech trees from the nearby forest, was certainly impressive. It’s amazing to think that those trees were considered some of the best in the world!
Is Skoteina Morna in Pieria region a haunted village?
The clear answer is No! Unfortunately, the closure of the factory in the 1960s led to a decline in the village’s resources and residents moved to a new settlement named “Foteina.”
The old settlement remained abandoned, and the locals still call it “Morna.” Despite being uninhabited for over 40 years, the village holds a unique charm that attracts visitors from all over. Its traditional architecture, including the church of Agios Nikolaos, the arched bridge in Mavroneri, and the ruins of the timber factory, give you a glimpse of its once-thriving past.
Skoteina Mornas’s old village has become quite famous for its eerie stories, which have turned it into a “haunted” place in modern folk traditions.
