Platamon Castle is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Pieria, standing on a rocky promontory between Mount Olympus and the Aegean Sea.

Built in a strategically important location near the Tempe Valley and the route leading towards Macedonia, the castle controlled one of the main passages connecting Macedonia with Thessaly and southern Greece. The area is also associated with the ancient city of Herakleion.

The fortress is an impressive example of medieval military architecture. Its polygonal walls are reinforced by eight rectangular towers, while the main entrance on the southern side is protected by a powerful tower and a double-entry system.

At the highest part of the fortress stands the acropolis, protected by its own wall and dominated by an impressive octagonal tower rising more than 20 metres above the rocky hill. This central stronghold gives Platamon Castle much of its distinctive character.

The history of Platamon Castle continued through several periods. During the Latin occupation, the castle was granted as a fief to Roland Piscia by Boniface of Montferrat. In the 13th century Byzantine authority was restored under Theodore Komnenos Doukas. The castle was later captured by the Ottomans in the 14th century, briefly occupied by the Venetians in the 15th century and subsequently returned to Ottoman rule until the liberation of Macedonia.

Walking through the fortress allows you to experience its walls, towers, battlements and defensive layout while taking in the surrounding landscape. The elevated position provides wide views towards the Aegean Sea and the coastline of Pieria, with Mount Olympus rising behind the castle.
