Description
The Castle of Platamon (Κάστρο του Πλαταμώνα) is dated back to the Middle Byzantine period (10th century AD). It is a Crusader Castle in Pieria region built on a rocky hill with unique views southeast of Mount Olympus between 1204 and 1222.
Platamonas Castle played a significant role in the history of Pieria region due to its strategic position that controls the exit of the Tempe valley, through which passes the main road connecting Macedonia with Thessaly and southern Greece.
In addition, The Castle of Platamon was an imposing medieval fortress until the late 19th century. So, you will enjoy exploring churches, houses, a smithy, pottery, and other buildings inside the Castle that testify to the life of the past. Also, you will find Cannons that served in the later Middle Ages, as the defense against pirates and as a general defense of the fortress. Moreover, It had cisterns to ensure the water supply during a longer-lasting siege.
The surrounding area of Platamonas Castle is designed as a polygon with irregular towers at irregular intervals, as you can see two shorter Towers at the hill's bottom on both sides of the land, which extends into the sea.
Also, The Tower "Donjon" which had its walls in the western part of the Castle, overlooks the highway. It was a last refuge for the defending side in the case of a siege.
Platamonas Castle has a terrific location on a hilltop with a panoramic view of the Aegean in front and Mount Olympus behind. It has a pathway that leads from the parking lot to its gate. So, you can enjoy an excellent 5–8-minute walk from Platamonas along the old railway up to it.
Ideally, The Castle of Platamon (Platamonas) will exceed your expectations and refresh your soul. Thanks to its stunning location, well-preserved walls, and gravel route to follow, and its history that started by the Franconian knights, enlarged by the Byzantines, Turks, and then the Venetians.
Ultimately, The Castle of Platamon is considered the most beautiful Castle in Greece. So, if you find yourself in the area, it is worth visiting it.
